Annotating multimedia...

Multimedia annotation, whether achieved through technology tools or on paper, differs from note-taking in that it

invites you to pose questions, note challenges, and even connect your prior knowledge to what you are viewing/listening to.
prepares you to reencounter the media with an eye/ear to answers to your questions.

Reviewing annotated notes triggers recall of not only the information, but also what you were thinking while viewing or listening.

What tools might you use?

Paper Notes
Take T-Notes during viewing/listening. Summarize action and record direct quotes on the left side.  On the right side, add your annotations, including reactions, questions, and personal connections.

Video Annotation Software
Make use of video annotation software such as Vidinotes, VideoANT, or Screen-cast-o-Matic to create notes alongside original videos.  Watch carefully and make notes on action as well as dialogue.

Photo Annotation Software
Make use of photo programs such as Fotobabble and Skitch to create notes directly on photos or other images. Point out key features worth considering or questioning.

Audio Editing Software
Use multi-track audio editing software to create a voice-over annotation track on top of original recordings. Go beyond simple description to pose challenges or answer questions posed within the audio recording.

What to note...

Keywords
Create a vocabulary list that includes new terminology, interesting words, etc.
Quotations
Direct quotes should be carefully transcribed.  If wording is unclear, spell phonetically inside brackets.  Place action inside of brackets.  Example:  "I don't [thin] Bradley was given a fair chance, [said Mr. Geracie]."
Summaries
Summarize information leading up to crucial points in the media to recall context.
Annotations
Record your own ideas and questions about the information presented.
